Religion in Italy

The main religion in Italy is Roman Catholicism, with the Pope as the head of the Church in the Vatican city, which is a separate state within the City of Rome.
Access to the Vatican city is limited. Many people go to mass every Sunday, but there are masses every day in every town and city across the country.

Religion is more strongly felt in the south of Italy, where pilgrimages and processions re-enacting the crucifiction of Jesus Christ are widespread. Padre Pio has been made a saint and is now called San Pio.
There are also muslim communities, about 800,000 in total, largely of first or second generation Arabs from North Africa.
