GERAGHTY Family History
Recorded in at least seventeen spellings including (Mac)Garrity, (Mac)Geraghty, Gerty, and Gearty, this interesting surname is of Irish origin. It is a patronymic, with "mac" denoting the son of, and was originally found in the form "Mag Oireachtach". This translates as "the son of a member of the Assembly (of Ireland)". The surname arose in an unusual way; at first it was O'Roduibh, but then taking the name of one namebearer Oireachtach O'Roduibh, in the 12th Century (see below), subsequent members of the clan began using this personal name as their surname.Select Audience

Nick Geraghty
Most Interesting. My great great grandfather was Thomas Geraghty (c1800-?) Patrick his son/my great grandfather (1832-1897) & my grandfather, Thomas.(1867-1953)
How-ever, as I understand it, they were one of 5 branches of the Geraghty family who came from from the townlands around the Cloonfad, Co. Roscommon. Cloonfad is situated right on the borders of the 3 counties of Roscommon, Mayo & Galway

Hi Nick,
I made an error in y earlier post. Our branch of the Geraghty family originate from Castlebar, Mayo according to my cousins DNA results and not Roscommon. The earliest ancestors I have on my tree was born in 1785 he lived and died in Kells county Meath. Unfortunately I can not find a birth certificate for him to know were he was born. I also found a Patt Geirty living in Kells Meath in 1663. As there are no records between those dates, I can not confirm if he is an ancestor or not.
I am waiting on my own DNA results to hopefully fill in some gaps in my family tree. There are also Geraghty's in Oldcastle county Meath that I feel may be related to us, as they were sponsors at Christenings for my great uncle and Aunts in Kells.

My Grandfather's grandfather Thomas Geraghty was born in Kells Co.Meath in 1805.His father's name was Pat geraghty. DNA shows our family branch originated from Roscommon, so I presume Pat moved up from there to Co. Meath in the later 1700's or early 1800's. I would appreciate any help to learn of my Roscommon ancestors.
